The original series "Herbarium" is comprised of paintings and mixed media images of plants. Noriko Saito first began creating plant images for her "Goethe series", inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Metamorphosis of Plants. Since 1999, she has continued to explore the nature of plants in "Herbarium". The hidden strength and energy that imbues everything from inanimate objects to the most sophisticated forms of life has always interested her. Through "Herbarium" Noriko Saito has depicted the primal forces that shape life in all its forms.

Noriko Saito was born in Japan. Having studied cultural history, geography, anthropology and art in Japan and Germany, she went on to receive her Master of Arts at UdK Berlin (The Berlin University of the Arts). She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Berlin, Basel, Cologne, Kyoto, Munich, Tokyo, Toronto, Verona and Vienna. From 1994 to 1996 she was Artist-in-Residence of the Art Foundation PRO ARTE in Ulm, Germany, while in 1995 she was a lecturer at the University of Ulm. Noriko Saito has received the Canada’s Year of Asia Pacific Grant, the Japan Art Fund Grant and the Yokohama Women’s Forum Grant. Her work is included in numerous public and private collections.
