[The Elderly Vase (or The Fallen Flower)]

when you grow old
and your sinews
wave like cornsilk
 
you can’t believe
the deeds you hosted
before the softening
 
take this old stand-in vase:
surprised like the wind
by everything
and puzzled
by the desiccation
of its flower
 
why surprised?
the vessel’s renewing water
is gone
its cells are dry now
