On Shelley Savor's Black Leaves

fallen, they are darker
than on the tree
examined,
they go their blackest

the deepness of black
is like gravity:
intimate, close-up gravity
(a glass falls and breaks
in the bathroom)
is the most irritating
this is the way leaves fall

Shelley Savor's

come to the page
as gravity's despair
colour's exhaustion

only their veining
shocking white
still tries to cry out
