RECENT POEM

ONE
a poem by Holly Lee

In the strings of he and she
there’s only one

her womb
carries a he

she, from his ribs
his companion

to what ends then
genders aren’t equal

all is fair we own
different skill sets

birds don’t
argue for fins

fish
for wings

some birds
do swim a little

some fish
fly a little

some flowers
hermaphroditic

some trees
dioecious, monoecious

as science classifies
it stupefies

morality equality
how to justify

in the string of he and she
s rests on his shoulder

we knead as one
we are wholesome
