An afternoon at V&A’s Gamble Rooma poem by Holly Lee
Piano man plays to himself
thinking who would be listening
(or so I think to myself)
I’m out of here in twenty
a staff comes over smiling
they start talking, laughing
(about what?)
not our pumpkin pecan pie
not our carrot cake
a man with silver white hair
comes over says thank you
his fingers go light, take flight
playing in front of the fireplace
afore the marble mantlepiece
supported left and right
by two nude jamb statues
on impulse he changes to Chan Chan
that long forgotten sweet sound
Buena Vista Social Club
Cuban passion
shared by a young couple
embracing and listening
their white sweaters become one
you never know who’s listening
(you are listening!)
as if he knows
he jumps to oriental

Christmas has just left
but piano man can still
be blithe and merry
looking up the painted enamel ceiling
runs round the frieze
the gastronomic theme
in squarish cream glazed tiles
each alphabet
supported by a child
quoting Ecclesiasticus
