Recent Poem
A poem by Holly Lee
For Rosetta (an octopus that played with dancing fish)
I could renounce everything
for a brief short year
just
to be with
Rosetta
The kelp world within worlds
hear the cacophony
of motioning water
a dancing wild forest under
up here
wave gently in evening light
silhouettes of rusted
dangerous war weapons
brief feints
swords, axes, spears, pikes
kelps are skilled dancers
These gentle giants
you use them to protect
camouflage, escape
from predators
from that pyjamas shark
you curl yourself
between brown blades
fuse your body and
change colour
you dream to become
a plant
A canny fighter
escaping death
you’re a malacologist
collecting seashells
urchin turbo conch
scallop abalone spindle
playing
underwater magician
building fortress
armouring your body
taking in new forms
your attackers, your foes
even your friend Craig Foster
would pass in marvel
calling this
what a
stranger of many things!
Still
the next minute
it scents you, greets you
one fearful bite!
yet what’s more mind-boggling
struggling out of a serrated mouth
you manage to climb
suck on its back
outwit your hunter
you stranger thing as a shark rider!
Dear Rosetta
so many clever ways
of evading death
only give up living
for your offspring
a little supreme being
three hearts
nine brains
eight arms
and
one soul
one exhausted
ailing body
dedicating to
one big purpose in life
Swim off babies swim off
these little wanderers
thrive by adapting
in temporary haven
so is
your life complete
your odyssey adjourned
your body broken down
declining, you perform
the last soft dance
a spent wavering kelp
yielding to your enemy’s grab
I joined Craig Foster
Rosetta
safely from my screen
for his amazing
brief short year
my imaginary friendship
shares the joy
and grief
of bonding
and losing
April 29, 2021
Thank you Craig Foster and your great team, to connect us back with nature. And thank you Rosetta, for giving me your imaginary friendship.
