Colour I

Living Coral

Pantone has picked living coral
colour of the new year
a saturated orange base
with a golden undertone
radiate the next 300 days
with its humanizing glaze
uplifting, versatile
life-affirming face

Yayoi Kusama wins the solo
most instagrammed
artist of the year
gathered infinity
eternity
in big, mirrored rooms
the colour of her hair
brighter than living coral

On the last day of the year
someone said
movies aren't moving at all
they are still pictures
selfies aren't selves at all
they are public images
pick a colour for social media
living coral or feverish yellow

Writings by Gary Michael Dault
based on Lee Ka-sing's photographs

(Lee Ka-sing -"The curtain idly hands there, waiting for the morrow.")

#132: "The curtain idly hands there, waiting for the morrow."

Everybody’s gone

down the second-class corridor

I did not touch or tell heads

I’m happy on a bicycle
pedaling round
a brawny circle

I’ve been granted
custody
of their empty places

I’m in charge
of the cloudy feel
of their absence
the grain of their going

Tabletop Studio
by Gary Michael Dault

No. 193. Janus.
He never could bring himself to party on New Year's Eve. He much preferred to consign himself to his studio and paint right through the Auld Lang Syne night until the dawn. This New Year's picture formed itself into a massive self-portrait--or rather a double self-portrait. The trouble was the "new" portrait seemed just as fierce and dissolute as the "old" one. So much for the benediction of New Year's Resolve. Are we really doomed to repeat ourselves? And never to struggle out of prediction?
