DOUBLE DOUBLE: Box-in-a-Valise

“The future of museums is inside our own homes”

A quote from A Modest Manifesto For Museums (the last point out of 11), from the book The Innocence of Objects by Orhan Pamuk. We were so inspired. In fact, we went to Istanbul in October 2018 to visit his museum.

About half a year ago, when we were working on the archives of our work for the past forty years, we picked up the idea of bringing it into an exhibition - to build a portable, personal museum gathering work from the earlier days, to mix with new and recent pieces, an exhibition that can travel. This idea, of course, sprang also from Duchamp’s Boîte-en-valise, a series of reproductions of works by himself tucked neatly in a suitcase, and which, he had personally produced 22 variant editions. In our humble case, the box - the first venue of our project, is our home. And as time goes by, variant editions will be generated for different locations.

Exhibition will be launched on May 1, 2020 as planned, and running through September 30. Due to covid-19, exhibition will not be opened to the public until further notice.

However, some of the exhibits will be displayed online in the beginning of May, and a number of publications will be released in connection with the exhibition. More information will be updated at this page - http://doubledouble.org/dd2020

Travelling Palm Snapshots
by Tamara Chatterjee

India (December 2016) – I had the privilege of celebrating the right of passage for a "youngster into manhood". Brahmin men go through a ceremony for which they enter into priesthood permitting them to perform socio-religious rituals; including prayers, weddings, birth and death rites. We gathered together for both the religious declarations and to party late into the night.
